REMEMBER ME (by Zendaya: Disney Channel Play It Loud)

SUMMARY:                                           RUNNING TIME: 3:03 Min.

Recorded by Zendaya Coleman, this tune is from the 2010-13 Disney Channel TV series, “Shake It Up.” The track appears on the 2014 compilation album, Disney Channel Play It Loud.

REVIEW:

Overcoming unremarkable lyrics in a Disney cookie-cutter tune, Zendaya’s nice R&B vocals are worthwhile.  The track further benefits from a solid back-up chorus and an appealing melody.  “Remember Me” presents a reliable option for any age 10-and under playlist.

SOMETHING THERE {1991’s Beauty and The Beast} (by Paige O’Hara, Robby Benson, Jerry Orbach, David Ogden Stiers, & Angela Lansbury: Classic Disney, Volume 2)

SUMMARY:                                           RUNNING TIME: 2:18 Min.

Recorded mostly by Paige O’Hara (as Belle), supporting vocals come from Robby Benson (as The Beast) and fellow cast members Angela Lansbury, Jerry Orbach and David Ogden Stiers.  Co-crafted by the team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, this tune first appeared first appeared on Disney’s 1991 Beauty and the Beast animated film soundtrack.  It also appears on 1995’s Classic Disney, Volume 2 album.

REVIEW:

Why this romantic song works so well is that it spells out the title characters’ evolving relationship.  More so, the song articulately brings their private thoughts to life, along with those quietly observing them.

While Robby Benson’s brief contribution is spot-on, it’s Paige O’Hara’s radiant voice that imbues “Something There” as a Broadway-style gem.  She receives delightful support from her fellow cast members, particularly Angela Lansbury at its conclusion.  Simply, this classy track’s timeless blend of poignancy and romantic humor is tough to match.

BELLE {1991’s Beauty and The Beast} (by Paige O’Hara & Chorus: Disney Princess Favorites)

SUMMARY:                                   RUNNING TIME: 5:08 Min.

Co-composed by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, this tune is primarily sung by Paige O’Hara as ‘Belle’ for 1991’s Beauty and the Beast movie soundtrack.  O’Hara is backed by voice actors as the village chorus observing Belle on her walk.  This song would resurface on 2002’s Disney Princess Favorites compilation album.

REVIEW:

Performed by committee, “Belle” deploys a superb Broadway-style sound.  Spelling out the lead character’s sweet-natured, bookworm personality prior to meeting the ‘Beast,’ Paige O’Hara’s vocals are a gem.  For fans of the animated film, adding this delightful track to a show tunes playlist makes perfect sense.

SOMETHING REAL {How To Build a Better Boy} (by China Anne McClain & Kelli Berglund: single)

SUMMARY:                                      RUNNING TIME: 2:42 Min.

It’s a promo duet by co-stars China Anne McClain and Kelli Berglund for their 2014 Disney Channel film: “How to Build a Better Boy.”

REVIEW:

One might describe the tune as standard, maybe even forgettable Disney music fare.  Yet, “Something Real” is surprisingly good, as the necessary elements for a catchy kid pop track are present.  Bolstered by a techno-styled melody, the likable vocal chemistry China Anne McClain & Kelli Berglund share holds up well.

To the actresses’ credit, “Something Real” is a radio-friendly tune worthy of an elementary school dance. Then again, the the caveat of a download is that its target audience will outgrow “Something Real” sooner vs. later.

FRIENDS ON THE OTHER SIDE (by Keith David: The Princess and The Frog movie soundtrack)

SUMMARY:                                       RUNNING TIME: 3:34 Min.

Released on the movie soundtrack for Disney’s 2009 animated The Princess and The Frog, this campy tune is sung by Keith David’s sinister Dr. Facilier.

REVIEW:

Let’s add a high-caliber singing voice to actor Keith David’s versatility as a performer.  Considering this droll tune requires side bits of dialogue, David’s performance concocts an ideal blend of show tunes, R&B, and jazz.  Even more so, David convincingly adds an unexpected song-and-dance element to Facilier’s menacing aura.  What a delightful three-and-a-half minutes of entertainment!

A DREAM IS A WISH YOUR HEART MAKES {Cover} (by Lily James: Cinderella movie soundtrack)

SUMMARY:                                       RUNNING TIME: 2:00 Min.

As the title character, actress Lily James sings this classic Disney tune for Cinderella’s 2015 live-action film soundtrack.

REVIEW:

Reminiscent of an elegant music box, Lily James interprets this classic Disney Princess song as it is an angelic lullaby.  Her soothing vocals makes this rendition “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” sparkle like a gem.  The downside is a short running time, but James’ classy performance makes up all the difference.

Note: For some contrast, a download double-feature would be Kari Kimmel’s bubbly “It’s Not Just Make Believe” from the 2007 Ella Enchanted film soundtrack.

THE BLACK HOLE {Suite Cover: from 1979 film} (by LifeStyles: Night at the Movies)

SUMMARY:                           RUNNING TIME: 4:59 Min.

Composer-conductor John Barry provided the original score to Disney’s same-named 1979 sci-fi film.  From Lifestyles’ 2001 Night at the Movies 2-disc cover album is this instrumental suite recreating “The Black Hole.”  This particular cover appears on Disc 2.

REVIEW:

Considering the film soundtrack’s availability is sparse, this faithful cover at least offers a five-minute sampler.  For what it is, this suite does some dynamite work.

AEON (by Nick Murray, Jeremiah Pena, & Juliet Lyons: single)

This New Age-style instrumental from Nick Murray and Jeremiah Pena (as well as a contribution from vocalist Juliet Lyons) was used for a trailer for Disney’s 2015 live-action Cinderella film starring Lily James.

Capturing a timeless ‘fairy tale’ sense of awe and wonder, the soaring “Aeon” is beautiful.  Musicians Nick Murray and Jeremiah Pena construct each step of this serene theme with precision.  Further enhanced by Juliet Lyons’ enchanting vocals, this track is definitely worth the download for any potential New Age playlists or even just to complete one’s Cinderella soundtrack.  “Aeon” really is a musical gem.

CANDLE ON THE WATER (by Helen Reddy: Classic Disney, Volume 2) {Pete’s Dragon}

SUMMARY:                                      RUNNING TIME: 2:58 Min.

Recorded by singer-actress Helen Reddy, she performs the live-action tune in character as “Nora” for 1977’s Pete’s Dragon.  Tis track was co-created by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn.  Reddy’s effort subsequently earned an Academy Award nod in 1977 for Best Original Song.  This tune would later appear on 1995’s Classic Disney, Volume 2 album.

REVIEW:

One could readily argue that this finely-tuned song is the most enduring asset of the original Pete’s Dragon.  This reviewer won’t dispute such an assessment.  Impressively, Helen Reddy’s classy vocal performance soars at all the right moments, conveying a hopeful exuberance that few others could match.  What’s particularly endearing re: this song is that Reddy’s voice doesn’t exhibit any smug self-satisfaction some performers with a similar octave range would be prone to do.  Between its poignant piano-driven melody and Reddy’s show-stopping vocals, “Candle on the Water” delivers Disney musical magic.  Highly recommended!

PRESTO

SUMMARY:           RUNNING TIME: Approx. 5 min. (Color)

Originally accompanying WALL-E’s 2008 theatrical release, this dialogue-free Disney-Pixar animated short is directed by Doug Sweetland.  Its producing team includes John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, and Jay Ward.

Set at an opulent, turn-of-the-century theater, a hungry white rabbit named Alec is desperate for an elusive carrot in a backstage dressing room.  After his dinner break, immaculate magician Presto DiGiotagione (who suavely resembles actor William Powell) hurriedly retrieves his pair of secret magical hats before returning to the stage.  He’s oblivious to Alec’s grumbling tummy.

Refusing to cooperate until he gets fed, Alec sabotages Presto’s act.  A packed house observes Alec’s feud with an incensed Presto.

Note: This Oscar-nominated cartoon is included on the Pixar Short Films Collection, Volume 2 Blu-Ray/DVD.

REVIEW:

Disney-Pixar delivers a hysterical Looney Tunes-style cartoon that vividly blends slapstick humor with high-caliber animation, all into a cohesive, fast-paced package.  Part of this short’s charm extends to Presto’s mysterious hats (one, a purple wizard’s cap and the other a classic black top hat), as the cartoon doesn’t divulge how/where Presto obtained them.  Viewers are instead left with the wonders of what all these hats can actually do, as Alec exuberantly defies his smug boss.

Impressively, Presto doesn’t waste time, as its ingenious gags are meant to rapid-fire one after another.  This short exudes the same kind of animated madcap magic (including some fun wordplay) that the old-school Looney Tunes typically have in abundance.  For cartoon fans of all ages, Presto shouldn’t be missed.
