WCW U.S. CHAMPION “RAVISHING RICK RUDE VS. RICKY “THE DRAGON” STEAMBOAT {Non-Title Iron Man Challenge} (WCW Beach Blast ’92: Aired Live 6-20-1992)

On June 20, 1992, this non-title ‘Iron Man Challenge’ occurred at the Mobile Civil Center in Mobile, Alabama for WCW’s Beach Blast ’92

On one side is WCW U.S. Champion “Ravishing” Rick Rude, with his usual ‘Dangerous Alliance’ cronies (i.e. Madusa and manager Paul E. Dangerously – aka Paul Heyman) ‘barred’ this time from ringside.  Opposing him is former NWA World Champion Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat.  The bout’s stipulation specifies that the wrestler accumulating the most falls within thirty minutes becomes the winner.   

Prior to the bout, co-hosts Tony Schiavone and Eric Bischoff offer brief remarks.  Seen at ringside are the commentators: Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Jim Ross.        

Note: Steamboat’s then-wife, Bonnie, and their young son makes a customary cameo appearance coming down to ringside during his ring introduction.

REVIEW:

Supposedly injuring a caught off-guard Rude’s ribs, Steamboat dominates the first several minutes.  Yet, an aggressive Rude still racks up multiple falls to gain a numbers advantage over “The Dragon.” 

For some viewers, this gritty bout could be construed as dull or merely slow-paced, but what matters most is probably its last ten minutes. Demonstrating several flashes of their impressive in-ring chemistry, Steamboat and Rude save their best trading blows for the end.  Hence, the suspense factor kicks in, as Steamboat is forced to race the clock and still remain conscious against Rude’s hard-nosed onslaught.

Including Ross and Ventura’s spot-on commentary, this non-bloody ‘Iron Man’ face-off concocts a welcome deep dive into WWE’s video archives.  If anything, even with ex-WCW Champions Ric Flair and Lex Luger by then working for the rival WWF, it makes for great nostalgia.  Specifically, this ‘Iron Man Challenge’ is proof enough that World Championship Wrestling (two years before Hulk Hogan’s vaunted arrival) still had several wrestling legends, who could deliver the necessary in-ring substance.

EPILOGUE/END CREDITS (by James Horner & Leonard Nimoy – from 1982’s Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan movie soundtrack)

SUMMARY:                          RUNNING TIME: 8:47 Min.

From the closing moments and end credits of 1982’ Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan movie soundtrack, composer James Horner performs the tune with an unidentified orchestra.  Before shifting into the closing credits, as heard in the film, star Leonard Nimoy provides the Original Series opening “Space … The Final Frontier” voiceover that his co-star, William Shatner, had previously delivered.  

REVIEW:

Long overshadowed by John Williams’ iconic Star Wars scores, James Horner’s own work from The Wrath of Khan is undeniably stellar. 

Instead of mimicking Williams’ epic style, Horner opts for a more nautical though modern sound (i.e. occasional synthesizers) that echoes the Original Series’ theme at the right moments.  More so, the low-key vibe Horner imbues this track makes wonderful use of poignant tinges to make the film’s storyline seem even more timeless.  It’s a welcome deviation from composer Jerry Goldsmith’s excessively grandiose take on 1979’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Still, what makes this original track frankly perfect is Leonard Nimoy’s brief presence.  With his familiar voice slightly filtered to sound raspier, Nimoy’s contribution conveys a ghostly effect – appropriately, given the film’s somber yet still optimistic ending.  More so, the teamwork between Horner and Nimoy ensures that “Epilogue/End Credits” saves the best for the last on arguably the franchise’s greatest soundtrack.  Highly recommended!

WELCOME BACK, KOTTER: BRIDE AND GLOOM (Season 4: Episode 14)

SUMMARY:                        RUNNING TIME: 26:00 Min.

This fourth-and-final season episode of Welcome Back, Kotter first aired on January 13, 1979, on ABC-TV.  It also served as John Travolta’s second-to-last appearance as ‘Vinnie Barbarino.’  Due to an ongoing creative/contract dispute, star Gabe Kaplan neither appears, nor is his character’s non-presence acknowledged in this storyline.  Norman Abbott directed this episode off Earl Barret & George Bloom’s script.

Juan Epstein (Hegyes) prods his best friend, Vinnie Barbarino (Travolta), into marrying his Guatemalan cousin, Angelina (Levario) into a quickie marriage/divorce to ensure her American citizenship. Television-saturated and constantly demanding, Angelina doesn’t speak English, which necessitates Epstein’s services as Vinnie’s translator.  Despite Vinnie’s desire to hush the matter, word quickly circulates to ‘The Sweathogs’ (Hilton-Jacobs, Palillo, & Shortridge); his academic counselors (Strassman & White); and the entire high school student body.

Vinnie’s trepidations over marrying Angelina worsen once she makes specific (and likely expensive) demands for the wedding.  ‘The Sweathogs’ further egg the situation on during a best-forgotten bachelor’s party the night before.  Vinnie & Angelina’s marriage ceremony takes an unexpected swerve once her passion for singer Freddy Fender comes into play.

REVIEW:

Aside from ‘The Sweathogs’ not even remotely resembling teenagers, the absence of series star Gabe Kaplan is just as glaring.  Still, had Kaplan appeared and pitched a few wisecracks, even his trademark quips wouldn’t have salvaged this dreck. 

Despite game efforts from Robert Hegyes, John Travolta, and guest star Rachel Levario, there’s just one single LOL gag before the last commercial break.  Otherwise, considering its eye-rolling premise, all viewers get is a dubious Latina immigrant stereotype and cliché-fest. 

Let’s just say that “Bride and Gloom” is best left in the Late 1970’s TV rerun dustbin.

STAR TREK: THE RETURN

Written by William Shatner, Garfield Reeves-Stevens, & Judith Reeves- Stevens

SUMMARY:

Released in 1996 by Pocket Books, the 371-page Star Trek: The Return is the direct sequel to the first ‘Shatnerverse’ entry – 1995’s Star Trek: The Ashes of Eden.  Given occasionally retroactive contradictions with Trek’s established mainstream continuity (i.e. the fate of the U.S.S. Enterprise-A), the so-called ‘Shatnerverse’ evidently occupies its own self-contained alternate timeline.     

Set a few weeks after Star Trek: Generations (and as teased by The Ashes of Eden), Starfleet’s Veridan III salvage operation of the crashed U.S.S. Enterprise-D is unexpectedly besieged.  At the base camp, Commander William Riker and Counselor Deanna Troi barely survive the unknown enemy’s onslaught. Is this ruthless attack merely a diversion?  Meanwhile, elsewhere on Veridan III, a visiting Ambassador Spock directly witnesses the theft of Captain James T. Kirk’s remains from his mountaintop grave. 

As it’s soon revealed, the Romulans have joined The Borg in a sinister alliance to destroy Federation opposition.  Joining a covert Starfleet strike team, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Dr. Beverly Crusher confirm this joint invasion has already commenced with the assimilation of the remote Starbase 804. 

Worse yet, through use of alien technology, Kirk has now been resurrected and then brainwashed.  His new mission is to kill The Borg’s greatest threat: Picard himself.  As a sleeper agent for the Romulan/Borg alliance, Kirk’s restored body is infested with bionic nanites that helped bring the Starfleet legend back to life.  Simultaneously, these same nanites are now slowly killing him.  Kirk, meanwhile, experiences enigmatically haunting dreams occupied by the ghost of Spock’s father, Sarek. 

Targeting Picard’s temporarily displaced crew (i.e. Worf, Geordi LaForge, & Data), a disguised Kirk intends to extract Picard’s whereabouts by any means necessary.  Though instinctively resistant to his brainwashing, the amnesiac former captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise finds himself on an intercept course with allies turning on one another.  With Riker and later Picard suspecting Ambassador Spock’s current Romulan ties, they wonder why The Borg didn’t assimilate Spock upon his brief capture.  Spock, in turn, questions Picard’s own previous Borg assimilation.  The rogue Kirk intends to take full advantage of such distrust – even as he is reunited with his two best friends. 

With Dr. Julian Bashir’s help, a team of U.S.S. Enterprise luminaries (Picard, Riker, Troi, Crusher, Data, Worf, LaForge, Spock, Admiral McCoy, and Kirk) join a desperate Starfleet strike mission.  Targeting The Borg’s home world, the Federation’s new makeshift Enterprise is caught in the crossfire by the same Romulans who had abducted Kirk.  With their new Enterprise’s weaponry rendered inoperative, Starfleet’s two greatest captains both realize an ultimate sacrifice must be made.  In order to thwart The Borg, will the simmering rivalry between Captains Kirk and Picard again end in tragedy? 

The initial Kirk resurrection storyline subsequently concludes with 1997’s Star Trek: Avenger.  The ‘Shatnerverse’ chronology would resume with two additional trilogies and, finally, a Starfleet Academy prequel in 2007.         

Notes: In addition to hardcover, this title’s alternate formats include paperback and audiobook; however, as of this writing, a digital format isn’t available. 

Purportedly, Shatner had pitched to Paramount Pictures after 1994’s Star Trek: Generations that the second Next Generation film explore Captain Kirk’s resurrection for the franchise’s upcoming 30th Anniversary.  As Paramount opted to instead produce Star Trek: First Contact, one wonders how closely The Return expands upon Shatner’s initial premise. 

REVIEW:

William Shatner (far more likely, his ghostwriters: Garfield Reeves-Stevens & Judith Reeves-Stevens) sharply concocts a slam-bang Trek adventure no doubt meant to be as cinematic as possible.  Including tidbits of well-informed fan service (i.e. V’Ger, Spock’s prior mind-melds, etc.), Star Trek: The Return devises a plot far more aggressively complex than the old school ambitions of Kirk & Picard’s ill-fated Generations team-up. Think of it this way: Star Trek: The Return aspires for a complicated storyline more akin to Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (and Star Trek: First Contact) than Generations.  

Whereas Generations clearly made Kirk its expendable guest star, The Return boldly flips that concept upside down.  Hence, it’s indisputable that Shatner’s take on Star Trek is that the franchise ought to still revolve around James T. Kirk.  Everyone else (from Spock, Picard, etc. on down), therefore, comprises his high-profile supporting cast.  As to a sixty-something Kirk’s inexplicable vigor, one might presume that his murky nanite-infused resurrection has transformed the Trek icon into something just short of ‘The Six Million Dollar Kirk.’       

In addition to lots of Kirk, this storyline supplies a welcome exploration of Spock and, to a lesser degree, the ever-cranky Admiral McCoy, as to their geriatric presence in the Late 24th Century.  As for Jean-Luc Picard, William Riker, and the primary Next Generation roster (plus guest star Dr. Julian Bashir), this novel at least lives up to their established characterizations. One can credit Garfield Reeves-Stevens & Judith Reeves-Stevens for ensuring that Picard’s team isn’t merely a hollow afterthought in a ‘Best of Both Worlds’ (pardon the expression) bridge between generations.  

The significant difference, however, is that the Next Generation characters have been obviously diminished in favor of emphasizing Kirk’s star power.  For instance, various scenes where Picard’s crew merely stands in the background observing Kirk (or Kirk & Picard) (or Kirk, Picard, & Spock) or make minimal contributions become abundant in the novel’s second half.  For that matter, the amount of deference aimed at Kirk is never left lost upon readers (who should already get the point).    

Spelling out further numerous contrivances building towards ‘Kirk vs. The Borg’ would likely present too many plot twist spoilers.  Suffice to say, the Shatner team’s efforts to re-imagine The Next Generation as far more action with dense plotting and far less technobabble can be construed as a worthwhile endeavor. Conversely, The Return’s mostly coherent plot risks being cluttered with non-essential characters and still squeeze in sufficient ‘screen time’ for everybody. This gamble, in terms of pure entertainment value, pays off, but anyone’s reasonable sense of Trek plausibility may be stretched at times too thin.

Ultimately, as long as one doesn’t mind Shatner’s ego assuming the captain’s chair (to the shock of no one), Star Trek: The Return still delivers an intriguing read for Trekkers from any generation.

GREASE: ROCKIN’ RYDELL EDITION

SUMMARY:                  RUNNING TIME: 1 Hr., 50 Min.

Paramount Pictures’ 2006 DVD widescreen release of 1978’s Grease is single-disc.  Randall Kleiser directed the film, which is adapted from the long-running Broadway stage musical.  It isn’t specified as to the film’s exact locale, but a subsequent drag race through a familiar river basin implies a Los Angeles, California suburb. 

Set in 1958, over a blissful California summer, shy Australian high schooler Sandy Olsson (Newton-John) falls in love at the beach with a local gang member, Danny Zuko (Travolta).  Not expecting to see her again, Danny begins his senior year at Rydell High School, with his fellow car-crazy and girl-crazy Thunderbirds (Conaway; Pearl; Tucci; & Ward)

Unbeknownst to Danny, Sandy has since moved to town and soon affiliates herself with Rydell High’s Pink Ladies (Channing; Conn; Manoff; & Donnelly) faction.  Weary of Sandy’s dreamy romantic claims and Danny’s own incessant (and egged-on) bragging, an abrasive Rizzo (Channing) deliberately reunites the couple – with awkward results.

The school year progresses, as romances between Sandy & Danny, as well as Rizzo and Kinickie (Conaway), undergo bouts of typical teenage angst. Danny becomes a school athlete attempting win Sandy back from the school’s dim-witted star quarterback, Tom Chisum (Lamas).  Other shenanigans involve the Thunderbirds’ auto shop class effort to soup up Kinickie’s (Conway) beat-up convertible; the school dance contest’s appearance on a live edition of TV’s National Bandstand; Rizzo’s possible pregnancy; and Frenchie’s (Conn) failed attempt at beauty school. 

Circumstances unexpectedly prompt Danny to replace Kinickie in a dangerous drag race in his friend’s refurbished ‘Greased Lightning’ convertible.  Awaiting Kinickie and Danny on ‘Thunder Road’ (the Los Angeles River Basin), with all their friends in attendance, is the despised punk, Leo (Stewart) – with his own tricked-out convertible.  Watching the climatic race, Sandy has an unexpected epiphany. 

On the last day of school, the new graduates energetically conclude their intertwined stories at their Seniors’ Day carnival.

REVIEW:

Aside from its ultra-flimsy plot (i.e. an implausible timeline and no parents on screen), the cinematic Grease wins on rollicking pure charm.  This asset can be effectively divided amongst its musical numbers, a game cast, and a campy escapist fantasy take on high school life in the Late 1950’s.  The lesson to take from Rydell High is that this romantic musical-comedy doesn’t have to be even remotely believable – just be as entertaining as possible.    

Led by John Travolta and undeniably Stockard Channing, the cast consistently delivers the necessary goods, no matter if a few scenes don’t age well.  The cast is assisted mightily by Patricia Birch’s choreography and a batch of timeless showtunes.

Overall, Grease lives up to its reputation as one of the best feel-good musical comedies of its era.  Including this DVD’s surplus of extra goodies, the Grease: Rockin’ Rydell Edition is a welcome treat.

HAUNTED HISTORY: HAUNTED CARIBBEAN (Season 2: Episode 10)

SUMMARY:                 RUNNING TIME: Approx. 47:00 Min.

As Haunted History’s final U.S. episode, “Haunted Caribbean” first aired on The History Channel on August 11, 2001.  Narrated by actor John Glover, this installment explores reputedly haunted locations in various Caribbean locales.  Included are uncredited reenactments of Caribbean regional history and reported sightings (i.e. interviewees Gerald and Loretta Hausman play themselves reenacting an unsettling incident where a ghost pirate ‘threatens’ a sleeping Gerald).    

Starting with Fort San Cristobal in San Juan, Puerto Rico, anthropologist Michael Gleeson and historian Milagros Flores discuss eerie legends associated with the locale.  Among them are reported encounters with an imprisoned Spanish captain, a ghostly Spanish soldier on guard duty, and the infamous Devil’s Sentry Box.  The empty Sentry Box purportedly has a history where numerous overnight guards vanished without a trace.     

For the Jamaica segment, married folklorists and authors Gerald Hausman and Loretta Hausman discuss ghostly sightings at “Blue Harbor” (aka the Noël Coward House) situated on Cabrita Island.  It’s acknowledged that fellow interviewee Gleeson owns Coward’s former estate. 

Next discussed are local legends associated with notorious 17th Century pirate Henry Morgan and those of alluring mermaids killing their male prey.  Another Jamaican locale explored is the reputedly haunted Edinburgh Castle.  Its initial owner, Dr. Lewis Hutchinson, is believed to have been a mass serial killer.  Similarly, the ghost of slave owner Annie Palmer, known as the sadistically evil ‘White Witch of Rose Hall,’ supposedly haunts her former plantation.  It’s acknowledged that both Hutchinson and Palmer subsequently met foul endings through evidently karmic justice in Jamaica.

Moving on to the St. Thomas beach in the U.S. Virgin Island, the initial topic is the presence of ghosts associated with 1853’s cholera plague victims.  Local resident Joseph LaPlace is interviewed, as is historian David Knight.  Also discussed are reputed (and unrelated) hauntings of two private homes at St. Thomas: one dating to the 19th Century and the other on Charlotte Amalie Harbor.  In this segment, local residents Kenneth L. Brick and Kate McDonnell are interviewed, as is author Joan Medicott.  The 19th Century legend of local voodoo enthusiasts attempting to turn a deceased elderly recluse into a zombie is also told.  

Lastly, at St. Croix, the “One North” estate once owned by a Mary Pomeroy is examined.  Including reenactments, the late Pomeroy (portrayed by an uncredited actress) resorted to a Catholic Church-sanctioned exorcism to cleanse her home.  According to a subsequent owner, George Tyler, the recruited priest’s efforts evidently succeeded.

Glover concludes by noting that haunting mysteries abound in the Caribbean, in spite of the region’s popularity with tourists.        

Notes: Including one standalone special (with actor Michael Dorn as the narrator), Glover’s U.S. version produced 26 episodes over two seasons between 1998 and 2001.  Haunted History’s 1998 British version lasted one season consisting of six episodes, which explored more historically-based stories in the United Kingdom, the U.S., and Tasmania.

REVIEW:

Clearly made on the cheap, the episode’s intriguing historical context and vivid tourist advertisement (stock) footage help make this show watchable.  Still, given this show’s low-rent production values (i.e. being filmed on videotape and the dubious reenactments), it’s a stretch taking “Haunted Caribbean” seriously. 

A lack of verifiable historical documentation of these hauntings is a glaring red flag, in spite of some seemingly credible interviewees.  The same applies to an over-generalization of local folklore/superstitions and stereotyping local residents (i.e. the region’s African and Spanish descendants) as being wary, if not fearful, of the supernatural.  One wonders if the lack of native input (at least, on-screen) is coincidental, in terms of the controversial claims Haunted History seeks to push.    

Regarding John Glover’s off-screen presence, it’s a mixed bag.  Hiring him as the series narrator, theoretically, makes good sense.  Viewers could presume that his narrative style meant to convey the same unsettling, almost creepy vibe Paul Winfield’s voice added to City Confidential’s lurid, real-life whodunnits – or perhaps mimic Robert Stack on Unsolved Mysteries.   However, when considering the contentious paranormal subject matter and his obviously scripted comments, let’s just say Glover’s contribution falls short of convincing armchair skeptics.

While “Haunted Caribbean” is instantly forgettable, its tidbits of often sinister historical fact dating back long before Christopher Columbus may still whet one’s curiosity.

THE JETSONS: SOLAR SNOOPS (Season 2: Episode 3)

First airing on ABC-TV on September 18, 1985, Barry E. Blitzer is credited with penning this episode.  Per the closing credits, the second season’s directors are listed together.  Hence, an individual director for “Solar Snoops” isn’t identified. 

Perpetual business rivals Cosmo S. Spacely (Blanc) and W.C. Cogswell (Butler) are once again one-upping each other in corporate espionage.  Spacely first pilfers Cogswell’s robot guard dog prototype, Sentro, after he is supposedly delivered to the wrong warehouse.  Spacely then disregards George Jetson (O’Hanlon) and his son Elroy’s (Butler) dire warnings that Sentro is really a ‘Trojan dog’ sent to spy on the company. 

Meanwhile, hidden inside Sentro is Cogswell’s spy, Galacta Sneak (Gordon), who then swipes Spacely’s invaluable chocolate chip cookie microchip.  Once realizing Cogswell’s scheme, Spacely seeks revenge by answering his enemy’s advertisement for a gorgeous yet minimally talented secretary.  Sending George in drag undercover as ‘Georgina Jetstream,’ Spacely expects him to con a smitten Cogswell into hiring ‘Georgina.’ 

The plan’s second phase involves ‘Georgina’ seductively retrieving the microchip from an unsuspecting Cogswell.  That night, the Jetson family helps prepare George for his sexy undercover role.  Simultaneously, Sneak extorts double pay from the incensed Cogswell for the stolen microchip.  Romantic dancing during a restaurant lunch date between Cogswell and ‘Georgina’ sets off Cogswell’s furious wife, who unexpectedly arrives on the scene. 

Meanwhile, George & Astro’s fast getaway with the microchip is threatened by Sneak’s tech-powered retaliation.  As for the microchip, Spacely doesn’t mind George’s simple means of concealing it until the inevitable happens.

REVIEW:

Given its premise, the sitcom plotting ought to amuse adults.  The same applies to the original voice cast’s charm, along with Hanna-Barbera updating the show’s familiar animation style for the mid-80’s.  Good production values holding up well forty years later, unfortunately, can’t disguise a dubious storyline aimed at the kiddie target audience. 

The script’s illogic might get away with a cross-dressing George Jetson briefly, but not for most of the episode – i.e. why doesn’t Spacely recruit a loyal female employee for his scheme?  Adding to this eye-rolling conundrum is Cogswell’s antics (no surprise) as a philandering husband – who first insults his wife’s weight and then later gets caught trying to cheat on her.  It’s unlikely that parents will want to explain the episode’s sexist humor (including far too much ‘Georgina’) to a confused child – even if the jokes are meant as harmless pap. 

Given the circumstances, “Solar Snoops” (even the ‘solar’ aspect of the title doesn’t make sense) is best left in Hanna-Barbera’s ‘80s animation dustbin.

Note: For a more kid-appropriate Jetsons caper, Season 1’s “Astro’s Top Secret” isn’t brilliant, but it has the right idea.

THE JETSONS: ASTRO’S TOP SECRET (Season 1: Episode 12)

SUMMARY:                 RUNNING TIME: 22:00 Min.

First aired on ABC-TV on December 9, 1962, series co-creators William Hanna and Joseph Barbera directed this Tony Benedict-written episode. 

Business rivals and golfing partners Spacely (Blanc) and Cogswell (Butler) incessantly egg each other on at the floating golf course.  A fed-up Spacely then insists that he will soon put his frenemy out of business.  Cogswell worriedly sends his jetpack-wearing henchman, Harlan (Morris), to spy on Spacely Sprockets. 

With Spacely delegating his scheme to an incredulous George Jetson (O’Hanlon), results are expected first thing the next morning.  Harlan’s further covert surveillance of the Jetson family home convinces him (and then Cogswell) that a luckless George has somehow invented an anti-gravity device allowing flight.  What they don’t realize is that the family dog, Astro (Messick), can now fly upon accidently swallowing Elroy’s (Butler) remote control flying car. 

Still, Cogswell is desperate enough to abduct a befuddled Astro to get some fast answers.

REVIEW:

Loaded with typically tame Hanna-Barbera sitcom humor, this episode is a delight in parodying corporate espionage.  Not only does the low-key animation still hold up, but the voice acting is also terrific.  Case in point: the sequence where a clueless Astro is being interrogated, enemy spy-style, delivers the episode’s best clichéd joke.

Even if “Astro’s Top Secret” isn’t memorable, it pitches a welcome bone for the futuristic canine’s fans. For the eight-year-old residing in all of us, this cartoon is amusing.

RICKY “THE DRAGON” STEAMBOAT & STING vs. “STUNNING” STEVE AUSTIN & “NATURE BOY” RIC FLAIR, with “SENSUOUS” SHERRI (WCW Saturday Night: Televised: 7-30-1994)

SUMMARY:                   RUNNING TIME: Approx. 29:00 Min.

For the July 30, 1994, edition of WCW Saturday Night, the main event would pit Sting and Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat (both former WCW World Champions) vs. the arrogant WCW U.S. Champion “Stunning” Steve Austin and “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair, accompanied by ‘Sensuous’ Sherri Martel.  The bout was presumably filmed at WCW Saturday Night’s studio: the Center Stage Theater in Atlanta, Georgia.  The announcers are Tony Schiavone and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. 

Notably, the bout was televised (but not necessarily filmed) days after WCW Bash at The Beach where Flair had dropped the WCW World Heavyweight Championship to Hulk Hogan. 

REVIEW:

Both duos are in excellent form, as Steamboat’s on-screen chemistry with Flair and Austin demonstrates why they were undoubtedly his best WCW adversaries (along with Rick Rude).  More so, Austin and Flair’s heel teamwork is impressive. 

Given that Steamboat’s active in-ring career ended only months later (due to an injury), fans shouldn’t mind seeing that he gets more screen time than Sting.  Eerily, it’s like a premonition that Schiavone and Heenan comment that some think that an aging Steamboat’s abilities had somewhat declined.  That may have been accurate, but, even in his early forties, Steamboat still nimbly holds his own against Austin (a decade younger) and a timeless, 44-year-old Flair.  What can else be said of a mid-thirties Sting, other than he delivers exactly what it is required of him.        

The bout’s only stale component is “Sensuous” Sherri Martel’s participation.  Her villainous antics come off as a tired cliché (after three productive years performing the same function in the WWF for Randy Savage, Ted DiBiase, and finally Shawn Michaels).  Still, she is a welcome upgrade over Flair’s dubious former valet/maid, ‘Fifi,’ who “The Nature Boy” would marry in real life decades later.      

Though this tag bout’s action is formulaic and becomes somewhat monotonous (presumably, to fill at least thirty minutes of airtime), neither the participants nor the announcers let viewers down.  That includes a somewhat unexpected finish, in terms of which tandem scores a decisive win.

Televised on January 22, 1994, this WCW Saturday Night six-man main event was filmed at WCW’s Atlanta, GA studio: the Center Stage Theater.  On one side stands Sting, The Boss (Ray Traylor – formerly the WWF’s Big Boss Man and the UWF’s Big Bubba Rogers), and, in the aftermath of Starrcade 1993, the newly crowned WCW World Champion, “Nature Boy” Ric Flair.  Accompanying this trio to ringside is fellow wrestler, Ice Train. 

Opposing them are WCW International World Champion “Ravishing” Rick Rude, WCW U.S. Champion “Stunning” Steve Austin, and a supposedly resentful ex-WCW World Champion, Ron Simmons.  Accompanying them is Austin’s manager, Col. Robert Parker.     

The announcers are Tony Schiavone & Jesse “The Body” Ventura.

REVIEW:

Given the considerable star power involved, one would expect in-ring fireworks.  While waiting for some burst of welcome chaos, viewers instead get formulaic tag action.  Hence, this average TV six-man showdown is enjoyably watchable (including Ventura & Schiavone’s repartee) for the right reasons. It’s just not memorable.
