MY HEART WILL GO ON (by Celine Dion: Titanic movie soundtrack)

SUMMARY:                         RUNNING TIME: 5:10 Min.

As the love song narrating the end credits of James Cameron’s 1997 Oscar-winning film, this poignant track was recorded by Celine Dion.  Among its numerous accolades are wins at the 1998 Golden Globes, the 1998 Oscars, and the 1999 Grammys.

Note: The song was simultaneously recorded for inclusion on Dion’s 1997 album, Let’s Talk About Love.

REVIEW:

In the context of the film’s closing credits, Celine Dion’s track is superb.  Unabashedly romantic (or sentimentally mushy, if you will), it’s up to the individual listener how well Dion’s signature hit has aged.

Just hearing actress Kate Winslet’s public comments — suffice to say, she has allegedly has been subjected to this track far, far too often.  This dilemma stems not only from its overwhelming radio overexposure (much like Bryan Adams’ 1991 smash hit “Everything I Do (I Do It For You)” for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), but also perhaps from Dion’s own grandiose performance.

To her credit, Dion’s voice gracefully ignites composer Will Jennings’ lyrics and James Horner’s gorgeous melody.  Its wistful spirit harkens back to the kind of heartfelt romanticism that powers Helen Reddy’s “Candle on the Water,” from the original Pete’s Dragon.  In that sense, hearing this track for the first time can be stunning.

Even if Dion’s performance over-extends itself, “My Heart Will Go On” is still terrific when heard every once so often.  Much like Reddy’s timeless “Candle on the Water,” it’s an undeniable showstopper.

IF YOU WERE HERE {from 1984’s Sixteen Candles} (by The Thompson Twins: VH1 – The Big 80’s — The Big Movies)

SUMMARY:                        RUNNING TIME: 2:57 Min.

Recorded by The Thompson Twins, this track from their 1983’s Quick Step & Side Kick album is heard in the 1984 Molly Ringwald film, Sixteen Candles.  Among other collections, the tune would subsequently resurface on 1998’s VH1: The Big 80’s – The Big Movies compilation album.

REVIEW:

As a New Wave pop equivalent of a cologne spritz, “If You Were Here” retains a timeless scent linking it to the mid-80s.  The song’s subtle charm and slightly quirky sound makes it a decent catch for ‘80s New Wave/nostalgia pop and/or soundtrack playlists.

HA! (by Dianne Reeves: The Grand Encounter)

SUMMARY:                      RUNNING TIME: 3:27 Min.

Composed by H. Mussullini & C. Ventura, this upbeat, 60’s-style jazz tune appears as Track # 7 on Dianne Reeves’ 1996 jazz/blue album, The Grand Encounter.  Roger Holmes arranged and transcribed the tune.  Accompanying Reeves are: James Moody (saxophone & vocals); Clark Terry (trumpet & vocals); Al Grey (trombone & vocals); Phil Woods (alto saxophone); & Kimberly Longstreth (vocals).

REVIEW:

Reminiscent of Mel Tormé’s trademark style, this classy jazz/bop tune is practically a jazz time machine.  Leading an exuberant \jazz ensemble, Dianne Reeves shares the spotlight well.  Well-played!

RETURNING HOME {1985’s North and South) (by Bill Conti & The London Symphony Orchestra: Highlights from The Right Stuff/North and South)

SUMMARY:                                RUNNING TIME: 2:14 Min.

In 1985, composer/conductor Bill Conti and The London Symphony Orchestra released an instrumental album consisting of highlights from 1983’s The Right Stuff and 1985’s epic North and South TV mini-series.  This bittersweet piece recurs throughout the North and South saga, including some of its pivotal moments.

Note: As of 2008, a limited-edition CD set of Conti highlights from North and South Books One & Two was released.

REVIEW:

Though North and South fans should quickly recognize this classy theme, others will only recognize it as a melancholic track.  Conti’s “Returning Home” effectively conveys the dramatic turbulence stirring among North and South’s Hazard and Main families.

SUPER TROUPER {Cover} (by The Cast: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again movie soundtrack)

SUMMARY:                              RUNNING TIME: 3:51 Min.

For the 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the extended ensemble cast belts out this ABBA hit during the closing credits.

Note: For the original film, the trio of Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, & Julie Walters cover this same tune.

REVIEW:

Incorporating a dreamy, disco-flavored overture, ABBA’s melody is expanded into a more cinematic style to accommodate this large ensemble.  Hence, their energetic rendition of “Super Trouper” becomes a welcome treat.  With Cher leading off, the feminine vocal chemistry displayed by Amanda Seyfried, Lily James, and Meryl Streep, among others, is impressive.  Suffice to say, they effectively drown out their male counterparts relegated to the chorus.  Well-played!

XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS TV THEME – OVERTURE {Cover?} (by Joseph LoDuca: Battlestar Galactica – The A to Z of Fantasy TV Themes)

SUMMARY:                            RUNNING TIME: 4:23 Min.

Composer-conductor Joseph LoDuca created the original Xena: Warrior Princess theme for the same-named 1995-2001 syndicated TV series.  It isn’t clear if LoDuca or a cover orchestra performs the extended series overture for the 2000 two-disc Battlestar Galactica: The A to Z of Fantasy TV Themes two-disc compilation album.  It’s Track # 14 on Disc 2.

REVIEW:

Impressive!  Whether of the performer, this track effectively captures the choral nuances of LoDuca’s theme.  Considering how difficult it is to track down LoDuca’s original work from Xena, this rendition is an ideal alternative.

AFTER HOURS (by Dianne Reeves: The Grand Encounter)

SUMMARY:                               RUNNING TIME: 6:06 Min.

Composed by Rozzo Gordon, this jazz ballad is Track # 6 on Dianne Reeves’ 1996 jazz/blues album, The Grand Encounter.

REVIEW:

Considering its length, the song risks overstaying its welcome.  Still, Dianne Reeves “After Hours” conveys a leisurely-paced, down-to-earth lounge style reminiscent of the era of Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday.  Reeves’ classy vocals imbue “After Hours” with some welcome jazz magic.  Definitely well-played!

SPACE: ABOVE AND BEYOND TV THEME {Cover?} (by Shirley Walker: Battlestar Galactica – The A to Z of Fantasy TV Themes)

SUMMARY:                            RUNNING TIME: 4:02 Min.

Composer-conductor Shirley Walker created the primary theme for the same-named 1995-96 FOX TV series.  It’s unclear if Walker or a cover orchestra performs the extended version for the 2000 two-disc Battlestar Galactica: The A to Z of Fantasy TV Themes two-disc compilation album.  It appears as Track # 4 on Disc 2.

REVIEW:

Impressive! Considering how difficult it is to find Walker’s official work from Space, this rendition is perhaps the best alternative.
