FIRST LIGHT, PART 1 (by Paul Hardcastle: The Chill Lounge, Volume 1)

SUMMARY:                                   RUNNING TIME: 4:44 Min.

This electronic jazz track was first released on Paul Hardcastle’s First Light album in 1997.  It would later resurface on Hardcastle’s The Chill Lounge (Volume 1) album in 2012.

REVIEW:

Between a bevy of synthesizer sound effects and funky choral-style chanting in the background, “First Light, Part 1” is a curious listening experience.  Its slower New Age jazz vibe resonating with European-style dance elements makes it frankly hard to define further.  The closest comparison re: “First Light, Part 1,” is that Hardcastle’s trajectory resembles a similar style of electronica associated with Jan Hammer or the late Robert Miles. This casually-paced tune is initially enjoyable in its entirety, but “First Light, Part 1” might not be an ideal choice for frequent rotation on playlists.

THE GLORY OF LOVE {Cover} (by Keb’ Mo’: One Fine Day movie soundtrack)

SUMMARY:                                   RUNNING TIME: 2:58 Min.

Written by Billy Hill, this jazz standard dates back to 1936 where Benny Goodman first popularized it.  For the 1996 One Fine Day comedy starring Michelle Pfeiffer & George Clooney, Keb’ Mo’ covers the tune for its soundtrack.

REVIEW:

Seamlessly blending jazz with R&B (including some great solo harmonica action), Keb’ Mo’ breathes fresh life into this oldie-but-goodie.  Sounding at the top of his game, Keb’ Mo’ makes “The Glory of Love” a delight of a download.

THEME FROM ‘LAURA’ {Cover: from 1944 film} (by Jazz at The Movies Band: White Heat – Film Noir)

SUMMARY:                                    RUNNING TIME: 5:25 Min.

By the Jazz At the Movies Band, this instrumental jazz standard is from their 2005 album, White Heat: Film Noir.  The theme dates back to composer David Raksin for extensive use in the 1944 romantic mystery film, Laura, starring Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, and Vincent Price.

REVIEW:

Lacking the lush Hollywood magic heard in the original’s haunting sound, this low-key tune is still a solid interpretation.  Reminiscent of the classy jazz sound that Dave Grusin is known for, The Jazz at the Movies Band admirably breathes sp,e fresh life into the “Theme from Laura.” Their lounge style-effort is worth checking out as a supplement to any instrumental jazz playlists, including who have enjoyed The Fabulous Baker Boys soundtrack.

THIS GUY’S IN LOVE WITH YOU {Cover} (by Harry Connick, Jr.: One Fine Day movie soundtrack)

SUMMARY:                          RUNNING TIME: 3:47 Min.

Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, this jazzy pop tune was initially recorded by trumpeter Herb Alpert in 1968.  For the 1996 One Fine Day comedy starring Michelle Pfeiffer & George Clooney, Harry Connick, Jr. steps up to cover the tune for its soundtrack.

REVIEW:

What a wonderful cover!  What makes it a genuine treat is that Harry Connick, Jr. makes the tune sound like an original.  In terms of vocals, he’s very much on his game here.  Just as impressively, the instrumentals are up to matching him.  For jazz enthusiasts, in particular, Connick, Jr.’s take on “This Guy’s in Love With You” is well acquiring as a download.

CRYSTALLINE (by Ivan Torrent featuring Celica Soldream: single)

SUMMARY:                            RUNNING TIME: 4:34 Min.

This 2014 single is a collaboration between Spanish composer-musician Ivan Torrent and songstress Celica Soldream.

REVIEW:

In terms of his instrumentals, Ivan Torrent is at the top of his game with this ethereally soothing track.  It’s further enhanced by the echoing of Celica Soldream’s spot-on vocals.  Upbeat in nature, “Crystalline” could work either for a movie trailer/montage or possibly as a more energetic alternative to sleep-inducing mood music.  Highly recommended!

HARLEM NOCTURNE: THE MIKE HAMMER TV THEME {Cover} (by The London Starlight Orchestra: 16 Famous TV Themes)

SUMMARY:                             RUNNING TIME: 3:28 Min.

Dating back to 1939, this instrumental jazz classic co-written by Earle Hagen and Dick Rogers was a frequent cover for decades.  Perhaps most memorably, the tune was became the lead theme of Stacy Keach’s hard-boiled Mike Hammer TV franchise in the ‘80s (and its brief reboot in the ’90s). The London Starlight Orchestra covered the Hagen-Rogers tune for its 1989 album, 16 Famous TV Themes

REVIEW:

Given its ultra-obscure source, one might have low standard-issue expectations for a nondescript orchestra covering “Harlem Nocturne.”  Impressively, this up-tempo rendition offers terrific entertainment.  Lightening the tune’s gritty noir-style spirit, The London Starlight Orchestra makes this jazz standard sound surprisingly fresh.  It’s worth checking out as a possible download addition to any instrumental jazz or relaxing TV tunes playlists.

THE ROAD … (by Keiko Matsui & Jackiem Joyner: The Road …)

SUMMARY:                                 RUNNING TIME: 4:28 Min.

As the title track off her 2011 album, The Road…, Japanese keyboardist Keiko Matsui teams up with saxophonist Jackiem Joyner on this instrumental jazz track.  It’s Track # 9 on the album.

REVIEW:

Unlike the upbeat previous track (# 8: “Affirmation,” with guest saxophonist Kirk Whalum), “The Road…” is noticeably more dramatic, including some melancholic beats.  Yet, Keiko Matsui’s keyboard magic once more comes alive here – as with Whalum, her creative chemistry with Jackiem Joyner is gorgeous.  While this track easily mingles into Matsui’s extensive playlist, it’s still a “Road…” well worth taking.

EMBRACE & SURRENDER (by Keiko Matsui: The Road …)

SUMMARY:                        RUNNING TIME: 4:46 Min.

For her 2011 album, The Road…, Japanese keyboardist Keiko Matsui performs this instrumental jazz track.  It’s Track # 5 on the album.

REVIEW:

Imbuing “Embrace & Surrender” with a timelessly jazzy sound, Keiko Matsui works her instrumental magic on this tune.  Further enhancing the experience for listeners is some old school blues thrown in for good measure.  Suffice to say, Matsui’s track delivers first-class entertainment for instrumental enthusiasts from any generation.

AURA (by BrunuhVille: Aura)

SUMMARY:                                     RUNNING TIME:  3:29 Min.

Released by Portuguese composer, BrunuhVille, it’s the lead-off track from his same-titled 2013 album.

REVIEW:

Its melancholic ambiance is balanced by a beautiful serenity later in the track.  In that sense, BrunuhVille’s magic as a musical artist-composer on this track is comparable to similar work by Secret Garden.  For epic instrumental enthusiasts, this somber track is definitely a gem worth downloading for fantasy-adventure playlists.
