STORMS IN AFRICA, PART 2 (by Enya: Watermark)

SUMMARY:                        RUNNING TIME: 3:01 Min.

Reprising the fourth track, it’s the finale of Enya’s 1988 Watermark album.  Unlike ‘Part 1,’ this track briefly includes a recurring thunderstorm sound effect.

REVIEW:

Beyond the sound effects and a shorter running time, there’s no other perceptible difference between Parts 1 and 2 of “Storms in Africa.” For practical purposes, one should deem ‘Part 2’ as an alternate reprise of ‘Part 1.’  Neither track is brilliant, but the sound is distinctively Enya.

To her credit, Enya ensures that the classy sound of “Storms in Africa” (either half) is a nice choice for meditative and/or relaxation-themed playlists.

STORMS IN AFRICA, PART 1 (by Enya: Watermark)

SUMMARY:                                RUNNING TIME: 4:04 Min.

It’s the fourth track off Enya’s 1988 Watermark album.  Its second half (or, more accurately, a reprise) serves as Watermark’s conclusion.

REVIEW:

If compared to Enya’s best works, this track isn’t a standout.  Still, Enya ensures that the classy sound of “Storms in Africa, Part 1” is a reliable choice for meditative and/or relaxation-themed playlists.

LADYHAWKE – MAIN TITLE (by Andrew Powell, Alan Parsons, & The New Philamornia Orchestra London: Ladyhawke movie soundtrack)

SUMMARY:                          RUNNING TIME: 3:00 Min.

From the 1985 film soundtrack, British conductor/composer Andrew Powell (with some help from Alan Parsons) provides the exuberant main title.  Its symphonic sound is provided by New Philamornia Orchestra London.

REVIEW:

Talk about irony, as only this theme’s poignant final seconds befits a medieval fantasy epic like Ladyhawke supposedly is.  Hence, this instrumental’s unique sense of energy won’t be mistaken as either a John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith work.  What makes this pulsating track such a terrific experience is its contemporary synthesizer-like sound (including plenty of electric guitar).  For soundtrack or instrumental enthusiasts, “Ladyhawke (Main Title)” won’t disappoint listeners.

THE WEDDING MARCH (by Queen: Flash Gordon movie soundtrack)

SUMMARY:                              RUNNING TIME: 0:56 Min.

As the theme for the Dale Arden/Ming the Merciless ‘shotgun’ wedding, Queen performs this minute-long instrumental.  The track was composed by Queen’s Brian May.

REVIEW:

If one is ever seeking an electrified rock version of the classic wedding march (by Queen, no less) for that special day, then this is it.  No matter how short this track is, this novelty gem proves a keeper.

THE LONGSHIPS (by Enya: Watermark)

SUMMARY:                              RUNNING TIME: 3:39 Min.

It’s the tenth track off Enya’s 1988 Watermark album.

REVIEW:

The track’s best asset is undoubtedly Enya’s classy Celtic vocals.  Yet, as compared to other Watermark tracks, there isn’t anything special re: “The Longships” that makes it worth purchasing as a solo download.

RHAPSODY ON A THEME OF PAGANINI {Cover} (by John Barry & Chet Swiatkowski: Somewhere in Time movie soundtrack)

SUMMARY:                             RUNNING TIME: 2:53 Min.

Recorded by the film’s composer-conductor, John Barry, and pianist Chet Swiatkowski, it’s the pivotal instrumental from 1980’s Somewhere in Time soundtrack.  The piece was originally composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff in 1934.

REVIEW:

Exquisite!  Pairing John Barry’s orchestral mastery with Chet Swiatkowski’s elegant piano work makes this music box-like collaboration into a modern classic.  Beyond its status as a soundtrack favorite, this poignant instrumental is absolutely worth adding to any relaxation, sleep aid, and/or meditative playlists.
