CURSUM PERFICIO (by Enya: Watermark)

SUMMARY:                                  RUNNING TIME: 4:09 Min.

Despite its actual name, it’s the title tune (Track # 2) off Enya’s 1988 Watermark album.  The Latin phrase translates to “watermark,” or, specifically, the end of one’s journey (from a first person point-of-view).

REVIEW:

Unlike other tracks on Watermark, “Cursum Perficio” isn’t likely to inspire a meditative or relaxing mood.  Its initial gentleness evolves into a seemingly ominous narrative, per the song’s extensive choral chanting.  Enya’s fans can best appreciate this track’s sophistication, but the noticeably dramatic “Cursum Perficio” doesn’t apply towards practical use (i.e. yoga and massage therapy).

SUMMARY:                                  RUNNING TIME: 2:36 Min.

This instrumental track appears on Disc 3 of Vanessa-Mae’s 2000 Classical Collection, Part 1 album.

REVIEW:

“Chinese Folk Tune” has a wonderful sound, courtesy of this orchestral interpretation and Vanessa-Mae’s serene violin work.  As one of many low-key gems on this three-disc album, this track is recommended.

BEFORE I LEAVE THIS WORLD (by Ivan Torrent: single)

SUMMARY:                                       RUNNING TIME: 2:50 Min.

This 2012 single is from Spanish composer-musician Ivan Torrent.  Its feminine vocals are apparently uncredited.

REVIEW:

Its slow, ethereal sound is superb by combining Ivan Torrent’s New Age melody and the effect of the haunting, angelic-like vocals.  Other than this track might have been extended at least an extra minute, Torrent’s instrumental magic once more is quite impressive.  For New Age and epic instrumental enthusiasts, “Before I Leave This World” would make a welcome addition to various epic playlists.

CARIBBEAN BLUE (by Enya: Shepherd Moons)

SUMMARY:                          RUNNING TIME: 3:59 Min.

It’s the second track off Enya’s 1992 Shepherd Moons album.

REVIEW:

Working off a beautiful New Age melody, Enya sounds at the top of her game.  This luxurious tune strikes an ideal balance between her voice and the melody.  While this song isn’t necessarily among her all-time best, it’s still a high-caliber performance.  For any home and work playlists, the subdued charm of “Caribbean Blue” is a worthwhile experience.

CHILDREN – ORIGINAL VERSION (by Robert Miles: Dreamland)

SUMMARY:                                RUNNING TIME: 6:19 Min.

For his 1996 dance-electronica album, Dreamland, composer-musician Robert Cocina (aka Robert Miles) performs this instrumental (Track # 10) in an expansion of its radio form.  The track’s intro combines electronica with what faintly sounds like chirping seagulls.

Notes: The four-minute radio version of “Children” appears on the compilation album, Ultimate Dance Party 1997, Volume 1.  Yet, the closest approximation on Dreamland to the radio version is Track # 1’s expanded ‘dream’ variant (running time of 7:04).

REVIEW:

Building up slower to a consistent beat, this interpretation of “Children” has a completely different tone.  By the album’s high-energy standards, it’s actually one of Dreamland’s few subdued tunes.  The melody is fine … but, with a six-plus minute running time, this track may grow tiresome.  Specifically, Miles just repeats the same beats over and over, with occasional sound effects thrown in for good measure.  Though it’s longer, Track # 1’s ‘dream’ variant, which is straight-up electronica/dance, is a far better bet for an adrenaline-pumping workout playlist.  The unimaginative “Children (Original Version)” could be used for aerobic workouts, too, but it’s probably best-utilized for a winding-down stretch.

STAR TREK: THE CAGE {Cover – Suite} (by Erich Kunzel & The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra: Symphonic Star Trek)

SUMMARY:                            RUNNING TIME: 7:33 Min.

First recorded for Star Trek’s unsold first pilot, “The Cage,” in 1965, the Alexander Courage themes contained in this suite can be heard in Star Trek’s first-season two-parter, “The Menagerie, Parts I & II” in 1966.  Specifically, the suite helps narrate U.S.S. Enterprise Captain Christopher Pike’s (Jeffery Hunter) illusionary ordeal on the planet, Talos IV.  This specific suite was recorded by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra for 1996’s Symphonic Star Trek instrumental album.

REVIEW:

The rejected “Cage” was reportedly deemed far too ‘cerebral’ by NBC television executives.  Listening to this somewhat haunting suite, one can grasp why its unusual sound would have been far ahead of its time for 1965 American television.  This “Cage” blends Star Trek’s original theme with classy instrumental flavors shifting from exotic to mysterious while still anchored to a sense of sci-fi/fantasy.  Ethereally replicated by Erich Kunzel & the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, this rare track is a keepsake, not for only long-time Star Trek fans, but for any sci-fi playlist.

BOOK OF DAYS (by Enya: Shepherd Moons)

SUMMARY:                            RUNNING TIME: 2:56 Min.

It is Enya’s seventh track off her 1992 Shepherd Moons album.  The song appears as the primary theme for Ron Howard’s Far & Away historical romance (starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman) released that same year.

REVIEW:

It’s vintage Enya.  Bolstered by a compelling melody, Enya’s poignant vocals prove ideal for an epic journey.  Clearly, Ron Howard’s production team made an insightful decision choosing “Book of Days” as Far & Away’s timeless and mood-setting theme.  Either as a single download, or as a centerpiece for Shepherd Moons, this track is highly recommended.

RED ZONE (by Robert Miles: Dreamland)

SUMMARY:                    RUNNING TIME: 6:56 Min.

For his 1996 dance-electronica album, Dreamland, composer-musician Robert Cocina (aka Robert Miles) ends it with this instrumental (Track # 11).  There’s also brief and foreboding sound effects, including an uncredited feminine voice murmuring her love.

REVIEW:

It is Dreamland’s only ominous tune, as there’s a vaguely sinister undercurrent worthy of a movie soundtrack.  While “Red Zone” isn’t memorable, it’s still a pretty good option for dance playlists and various workouts.

STAR WARS {Cover – Disco Medley} (by Meco: Disco Nights, Volume 10: Disco’s Greatest Movie Hits)

SUMMARY:                           RUNNING TIME: 6:26 Min.

Sporting vintage sound effects, this disco medley re-imagining some of John Williams’ original Star Wars themes has been available for decades in various formats.  Among its sources are 1995’s obscure Disco Nights, Volume 10: Disco’s Greatest Movie Hits and 1997’s Best of Meco.

REVIEW:

In terms of the ultimate Star Wars cover champion, Meco still prevails.  Beyond creating an awesome disco beat, Meco inserts an assortment of authentic sound effects: i.e. Artoo-Detoo’s beeping, a lightsaber duel, and even an X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter dogfight.  Excursions into “Obi-Wan’s Theme” and the cantina band sequence are seamlessly included as part of this track.  Considering the slick orchestral effort and synthesizer cues, Meco’s work has never sounded better as intergalactic ear candy.  What’s still remarkable about this homage is a welcome aura of unpredictability for those hearing it for the first time.  Unquestionably, this Meco cover is a fantastic musical treat for any Star Wars fan.

Everything works on this classy track, as Enya’s vocals are ideal for the soothing melody.  For any meditative-relaxation playlists, the tranquility of “Angeles” is a can’t-miss prospect.
