REVIEW:

Even without closing one’s eyes, it’s easy to visualize an unknown being’s extraordinary journey across deep space.  In terms of a poignant epic sci-fi instrumental, Thomas Bergersen’s “Starchild” delivers a knock-out.  Both bombastic and ethereal, this track would be ideal for a film or video game depicting a young alien refugee in search of sanctuary somewhere in the galaxy. This dynamite tune is absolutely recommended for epic score enthusiasts.

Very much a product of the Early ‘60s, it’s an engaging R&B gem well worth re-discovery.  Absolutely entertaining!

BRIAN’S ODD MOON RATING:                          9 Stars

NOBODY LIVES WITHOUT LOVE (Eddi Reader: Batman Forever movie soundtrack)

SUMMARY:                                      RUNNING TIME: 5:05 Min.

Recorded by Eddi Reader, it’s the sixth tune on 1995’s Batman Forever movie soundtrack.

REVIEW:

Exactly how this tune fits with Batman’s Gotham City is anybody’s guess. Meant as album filler, it’s actually one of the Batman Forever soundtrack’s better efforts. Anchored by a terrific melody, Eddi Reader’s soft vocals makes “Nobody Lives Without Love” a romantic pop gem.  This obscure song certainly merits re-discovery as a solo download option for contemporary pop playlists.

BRIAN’S ODD MOON RATING:                   8 Stars

Note: Even better is The Devlins’ “Crossing the River” – more underrated filler from the same album.

Performed by Really Slow Motion, it appears on the 2014 album, Of Mist and Magic.  This instrumental is composed by Ivan Torrent.

REVIEW:

This track concocts a cool mixture implying an epic journey that is both magically serene and darkly ruminating.  The right touches of poignancy are also incorporated.  Including its aptly-placed choral section, “Purple Skies” should be recruited for an medieval action-fantasy film or TV series.  This theme certainly proves worth downloading for epic instrumental enthusiasts.

MAGIC TOWER (By Really Slow Motion: Of Mist and Magic)

SUMMARY:                                 RUNNING TIME: 1:54 Min.

Performed by Really Slow Motion, it appears on the 2014 album, Of Mist and Magic.  This mostly instrumental track is composed by Mateo Pascual.

REVIEW:

Darkly ruminating and yet still fast-paced, “Magic Tower” would be an ideal choice for an action-fantasy film or video game trailer.  Its short running time practically spells that out.  Including its choral vocals, there isn’t anything unique about  “Magic Tower,” but the track certainly merits consideration as a download for epic instrumental playlists.

MAGIC OF LOVE (by BrunuhVille: Aura)

SUMMARY:                                   RUNNING TIME:  3:27 Min.

Released by Portuguese composer, BrunuhVille, it’s the third track off his 2013 album, Aura

REVIEW:

“Magic of Love” isn’t distinctive so much, as it’s a beautifully tranquil continuation from the album’s prior two tracks.  Impressively, it takes on a far more epic tone in the closing moments.  BrunuhVille’s timeless work on this track would be ideal for an European historical romance film.

SUMMARY:                                         RUNNING TIME: 3:45 Min.

This instrumental is Track # 3 on Jan Hammer’s 1991 jazz fusion album, Beyond the Mind’s Eye

REVIEW:

Though it’s hard to pin down Jan Hammer’s distinctively cool style, “Magic Theater” should very much appeal to his fanbase.  Its upbeat funkiness, with some touches of epic instrumental sound, might well draw in new fans, too.  For New Age-themed jazz enthusiasts, “Magic Theater” offers a neat option for home and road trip playlists.

SUPERWOMAN (Karyn White: Karyn White)

SUMMARY:                                   RUNNING TIME: 5:47 Min.

From her 1988 self-titled album, Karyn White’s signature tune is co-written by Babyface, Daryl Simmons, and L.A. Reid.  The song’s lyrics narrate a suppressed woman’s epiphany — she’s trying too hard to please her significant other and not getting much in return, both romantically and domestically.

REVIEW:

Sporting a solid 80’s R&B melody, the song’s excessive running time actually proves an asset for Karyn White.  With a gentle yet sultry sound similar to Jasmine Guy, it just takes White time to get warmed up.  Syncing well with her back-up singers, White’s vocals become increasingly appealing.  As for the song’s well-composed depth, it’s not a surprise that Toni Braxton emerged into stardom utilizing the same hip songwriting team a few years later.

Judging by her classy performance on “Superwoman,” Karyn White is evidently an underrated talent.  Aging surprisingly well, this tune offers an ideal Late ‘80s R&B option for various playlists.

SAVE THE WORLD (by Leah: Kings & Queens)

SUMMARY:                            RUNNING TIME: 5:00 Min.

Canadian songstress Leah McHenry (aka Leah or LEAH) released this rock track off her 2015 album, Kings & Queens.

REVIEW:

In terms of symphonic rock, Leah McHenry strikes gold — as a compliment, this tune sounds virtually out of Evanescence’s playbook.  “Save the World” doesn’t possess the most original sound, but, for fans of the genre, this underrated gem is worth adding to any epic adventure-themed playlist.
