Imagine a science fiction-themed epic instrumental, and that’s the direction Ivan Torrent takes “One of Us.”  This concept, which is further bolstered by Julie Elven’s haunting vocals, impressively works.  Packed with action cues, the track seems meant for either a space war movie or video game trailer.  For epic enthusiasts, “One of Us” is certainly worthy of adding to a favorite playlist.

ONSLAUGHT (Cold Black featuring Andy Taylor: single)

SUMMARY:                                 RUNNING TIME: 5:07 Min.

Released in 2012, this European-style techno-dance instrumental single is performed by Cold Blank, featuring Duran Duran’s Andy Taylor.

REVIEW:

For fans of indistinctive techno-dance melodies, this relentless tune fits the bill.  “Onslaught” tends to repeat itself, but the track’s pulsating beat (including synthesizer sound effects reminiscent of a laser blaster) is undeniably cool.  It’s an ideal choice for dance and workout playlists.

STARCHILD (by Thomas Bergersen: Sun)

SUMMARY:                        RUNNING TIME: 3:22 Min.

Off his 2014 album, Sun, European composer-musician Thomas Bergersen performs this track, which appears as # 8.

REVIEW:

Even without closing one’s eyes, it’s easy to visualize an unknown being’s extraordinary journey across deep space.  In terms of a poignant epic sci-fi instrumental, Thomas Bergersen’s “Starchild” delivers a knock-out.  Both bombastic and ethereal, this track would be ideal for a film or video game depicting a young alien refugee in search of sanctuary somewhere in the galaxy. This dynamite tune is absolutely recommended for epic score enthusiasts.

PURPLE SKIES (by Really Slow Motion: Of Mist and Magic)

SUMMARY:                                      RUNNING TIME: 3:06 Min.

Performed by Really Slow Motion, it appears on the 2014 album, Of Mist and Magic.  This instrumental is composed by Ivan Torrent.

REVIEW:

This track concocts a cool mixture implying an epic journey that is both magically serene and darkly ruminating.  The right touches of poignancy are also incorporated.  Including its aptly-placed choral section, “Purple Skies” should be recruited for an medieval action-fantasy film or TV series.  This theme certainly proves worth downloading for epic instrumental enthusiasts.

MAGIC TOWER (By Really Slow Motion: Of Mist and Magic)

SUMMARY:                                 RUNNING TIME: 1:54 Min.

Performed by Really Slow Motion, it appears on the 2014 album, Of Mist and Magic.  This mostly instrumental track is composed by Mateo Pascual.

REVIEW:

Darkly ruminating and yet still fast-paced, “Magic Tower” would be an ideal choice for an action-fantasy film or video game trailer.  Its short running time practically spells that out.  Including its choral vocals, there isn’t anything unique about  “Magic Tower,” but the track certainly merits consideration as a download for epic instrumental playlists.

MAGIC OF LOVE (by BrunuhVille: Aura)

SUMMARY:                                   RUNNING TIME:  3:27 Min.

Released by Portuguese composer, BrunuhVille, it’s the third track off his 2013 album, Aura

REVIEW:

“Magic of Love” isn’t distinctive so much, as it’s a beautifully tranquil continuation from the album’s prior two tracks.  Impressively, it takes on a far more epic tone in the closing moments.  BrunuhVille’s timeless work on this track would be ideal for an European historical romance film.

SEA OF ATLAS (by R. Armando Morabito, Tina Guo, & Julie Elven: single)

SUMMARY:                                   RUNNING TIME: 6:07 Min.

This 2014 single is a collaboration between composer-musician R. (Ray) Armando Morabito, his then-wife: cellist Tina Guo, and German-based Julie Elven.

REVIEW:

The pulsating electronica work by R. Armando Morabito delivers what one might expect of an epic instrumental – that portion is terrific, if not standard-issue.  Yet, the stellar cello play by Tina Guo is what bolsters this track up a few notches, as do Julie Elven’s hypnotically ethereal vocals.  The fast-paced “Sea of Atlas” would make ideal background music for a film or video game soundtrack.

BRIAN’S ODD MOON RATING:                       8 Stars

Note: In 2014, Guo & Elven also teamed with Morabito on the single: “Hydra.”  A second recommendation is the Morabito/Elven 2014 collaboration: “Angel.”

NOCTURNE (by BrunuhVille: Rebirth)

SUMMARY:                                        RUNNING TIME:  3:30 Min.

Released by Portuguese composer, BrunuhVille, it’s the third track off his 2014 album, Rebirth

REVIEW:

Effectively relaying both its piano and choral elements, the ominous tone of “Nocturne” is very reminiscent of similar artists, such as Nox Arcana and Midnight Syndicate.  In that sense, there isn’t anything distinctive about this track.

Yet, without using sound effects to enhance this eerie instrumental, BrunuhVille does a masterful job blending classiness and creepiness.  The end result is an ideal accompaniment to a movie trailer.  For fans of epic/Celtic/dark fantasy-style instrumental tracks, “Nocturne” is a gem worth downloading.

ILLUSION (by Leah: Of Earth & Angels)

SUMMARY:                               RUNNING TIME: 4:11 Min.

Canadian songstress Leah McHenry (aka Leah or LEAH) released this alternative rock track off her 2012 album, Of Earth & Angels.

REVIEW:

Based on her haunting vocal performance with “Illusion,” Leah McHenry could readily challenge Evanescence’s Amy Lee as perhaps the best female voice in alternate rock.  This song sounds virtually out of Evanescence’s playbook – it’s not so much imitation, as “Illusion” suggests more of a creative equal.  Like Lee, McHenry senses the value (at least, on this track) of not going overboard on symphonic metal.  For fans of the genre, the pulsating “Illusion” is an underrated gem well worth discovery.

ICARUS (by Ivan Torrent & Julie Elven: single)

SUMMARY:                                    RUNNING TIME: 4:35 Min.

Inspired by the mythical Icarus and his fall to Earth, this 2012 single is an epic instrumental collaboration between Spanish composer-musician Ivan Torrent and German-based songstress Julie Elven.

REVIEW:

It’s a daunting task to bring Greek mythology to life purely through sound, but Ivan Torrent and Julie Elven deliver high-caliber efforts interpreting the Icarus parable.  Most notably, in addition to the epic adventure cues, Torrent adds the right touch of poignant insight.

Elven’s ethereal vocals then lift that element to another level, as if describing a soaring Icarus keeps tempting fate — an arrogant disregard for his father’s explicit instructions.  One can practically visualize the young man’s exhilarating flight before his artificial wings ultimately wilt under the heat of the sun.  For epic enthusiasts, “Icarus” earns its consideration as a download to a favorite playlist.
