SUMMARY:
Published by Dark Horse Comics for July 2007, this six-page black-and-white teaser promotes the next Hunter Rose (as Grendel) mini-series. Toying with his terrified prey, Grendel concludes an easy hunt at the victim’s safe house. Decades later, a mysterious woman (possibly Rose’s descendant) ponders a deliberately missing section from his private journals.
REVIEW:
Sampling Grendel’s ruthlessness, writer-artist Matt Wagner doesn’t do anything extraordinary. Even if his hard-nosed writing isn’t compelling, Wagner’s distinctive artistic style is hard to miss. For those unfamiliar with his Grendel character, it might prove hard to finding an appealing aspect of Wagner’s masked anti-hero. As the mystery women’s identity is intriguing, Wagner leaves open there may be more to this mini-series than Grendel merely offing his fellow bad guys. It’s just not likely enough to justify non-Grendel fans to seek out the necessary answers.
ADDITIONAL CONTENT:
There’s a full-page ad for Grendel: Behold the Devil # 1. An insightful six-page excerpt of Matt Brady’s interview with Grendel creator Matt Wagner is included. Please be advised of some explicit language (i.e. multiple uses of the ‘f-word’).
