SUMMARY:
Published by Dynamite Entertainment in 2007, this untitled eight-page teaser introduces the blond Jana the Jungle Girl, who baits a monstrous creature, the ‘Mosasaurus.’ Killing the aquatic dinosaur (imagine an enormous crocodile with several flippers) for food, Jana also nibbles on a six-legged insect that attempts to pilfer her catch-of-the-day. The teaser includes Jana’s sight of an imperiled plane closing in on her.
Notes: The inside front cover reveals thumbnail images for all three covers. Its two incentive variants are Cho’s uncolored sketch version and a partially colored version.
REVIEW:
Aside from her gross catches-of-the-day, there’s nothing remotely new about this scantily-clad Jungle Girl. Echoing Sheena – Queen of the Jungle, and Marvel’s Shanna the She-Devil, this tepid knock-off’s sole goal is evidently flaunting Jungle Girl’s lithe figure in a flimsy leopard-spotted bikini. Quite frankly, the artwork pushes clichéd cheesecake/”good girl”-style visuals. Beyond this tawdry approach, Jungle Girl’s lack of an actual personality sabotages a decent opportunity introducing her as a viable character. Compared to high-caliber projects Dynamite Entertainment has published (i.e. Project: Superpowers), this sex appeal-only retread is a genuine disappointment.
ADDITIONAL CONTENT:
There is a single-page “Dynamite Dispatches” letters, news, and notes column. Thumbnail cover reveals of Jungle Girl # 1 and Project: Superpowers # 0’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ versions are included. Promoting Project: Superpowers, a six-page tease includes a two-page cover reveal; an Alex Ross interview; and portraits of Black Terror, the American Spirit, Death-Defying Devil, and Green Lama. The back cover is a full-page cover reveal for Jungle Girl # 1.
