SUMMARY:
Published by Image Comics for August 2001, this untitled issue is completely black-and-white. Interspersed with fight scenes of a Noh cartoon series that Noh Agent Keiko (aka Scarab) is fond of, Keiko infiltrates the Control Corps prison-like institution. Unexpectedly encountering her beloved Yukio, Keiko agrees to flee with him. However, Keiko must first challenge the captive Kabuki to a deadly showdown inside her cell.
REVIEW:
Cleverly paralleling Keiko’s narrative with her Noh team’s cartoon counterparts, writer David Mack unleashes an intriguing Scarab tale. To Mack’s credit, he and artist Rick Mays certainly meld sophisticated and unconventional storytelling with a knack for unpredictably inspired visuals. Kudos also to artist Ryan Graff for a superb cover. Though re-reading it a few times may be necessary, this issue is well worth exploring, if only to absorb its impressive imagery.
ADDITIONAL CONTENT:
The five-page “Noh’s Speak” column includes fan letters; Scarab art book sketches; a Kabuki merchandise checklist; and David Mack’s miscellaneous notes.
