SUMMARY:
Published for March 2002 by DC Comics, it’s the one-shot prologue introducing a new African American heroine, Skyrocket, prior to Power Company # 1. Set seven years before, “First Gleamings” brings disappointed U.S. Naval aviator Lt. Celia Forrestal home to St. Louis. Despite her stellar qualifications, Celia is frustrated that sexism prevents her from achieving active flight status for combat. Comforting her are her scientist parents, who have invented the energy-harnessing “Argo” harness prototype.
As its impromptu test pilot, Celia helplessly witnesses the murders of her parents by the mercenary terrorist, Scorpio, and her minions. Green Lantern Hal Jordan pursues them, only to be followed by a vengeful Celia. Inspired by Hal’s pep talk, Celia takes flight once more as a star-spangled Skyrocket.
REVIEW:
Not only is the artwork excellent (including the cover image), the storyline does a terrific job with Skyrocket’s old-fashioned origin tale. Writer Kurt Busiek takes a fairly plausible sci-fi premise and imbues with Celia’s patriotic idealism. It also makes sense that fellow aviator Hal Jordan would ‘discover’ her, let alone spark her decision to join the ranks of DC’s super-heroes. Suffice to say, this comic is well-played and deserves a chance for re-discovery.

There is a single-page “Skyrocket” profile by her creator, Kurt Busiek. A thumbnail cover reveal for Power Company # 1 is also included.
