SUMMARY:
Part Six of the Way of the Warrior crossover is entitled “Essential Warfare,” as this DC Comics issue was published for August 1995. Outside Chicago, Assistant District Attorney Bourne takes a journalist on a tour of a prison facility dubbed ‘The Brig,’ which is being modified to hold super-criminals (and possibly a renegade Hawkman). Elsewhere, on the planet where the intergalactic Tormock Empire reigns supreme, flying monster shrikes pursue Diana Prince through the flooded city of Vuldar.
With teammmate Katar Hol/Hawkman, Diana joins with local rebel Probert to try rescuing the captive Justice Leaguer, Guy Gardner. Meanwhile, a tortured Guy finds out why Tormock Queen Katrine wants him for breeding purposes. This storyline concludes in Guy Gardner Warrior # 34.
REVIEW:
Boasting remarkably good visuals, Hawkman # 23 delivers exactly what the cover image promises. Though writer William Messner-Loebs doesn’t pack in any story twists, he fairly splits up screen time so both guest-stars Diana and Guy make as much of an impact as Hawkman. Above all, with a reliable art squad, Messner-Loebs ensures that Hawkman # 23, no matter how unremarkably clichéd the plot may be, is still an entertaining read for fans.
