SUMMARY:

Published by DC Comics for September 2004, this standard-length issue is entitled “Fate’s Warning (Part 3 of 4).”  With Hawkman (Carter Hall) in St. Roch police custody on suspicion of murder, it’s up to Hawkgirl (Kendra Saunders) to aggressively hunt down the demonic Angel Killer.  The Atom (Ray Palmer) tries coaxing an incarcerated Hawkman to take action before his secret identity is publicly compromised.

Despite her best efforts, Hawkgirl can’t stop the Angel Killer from abducting Domina Paris, who risks her life to aid Kendra.  Hawkgirl’s desperate measures may prove too late to save Carter’s girlfriend from a gruesome fate.

REVIEW:

Well-played!  Co-writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray devise an intriguing supernatural mystery-noir.  The  Hawks’ belligerent harassment by the St. Roch police, in particular, gives the plot extra depth.  While Hawkman has plausibly little to do, Hawkgirl’s solo heroics are a welcome prelude to her eventual turn headlining this title (post-Infinite Crisis).  The Atom’s jail cell cameo is an added gem.  On equal ground is high-caliber work by the art squad, including a spot-on cover image.  For Hawkman & Hawkgirl fans, this issue certainly deserves a chance at re-discovery.
