HAWKMAN # 46 (2006 DC Comics)

Written by Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray

Art by Ron Randall; Art Thibert; Walden Wong; Sno Cone; & Travis Lanham

Cover Art by Adam Kubert & Laura Martin

SUMMARY:

Entitled “Sins of the Past, Present, and Future,” DC Comics published this standard-length issue for January 2006.  Not only is the issue a direct precursor to the Rann/Thanagar War mini-series, it’s also linked to three other DC projects: Infinite Crisis, The OMAC Project, and Identity Crisis.

In hurricane-plagued St. Roch, Hawkman/Carter Hall & Hawkgirl/Kendra Saunders capture a dangerous OMAC pawn (who’s someone they know) to be cured by the JSA’s Dr. Mid-Nite.  Despite denying it to Hawkgirl, Hawkman flashes back to his secret meeting with Ray Palmer’s Atom after Identity Crisis.  An outmatched Adam Strange sets out to recruit help from Earth re: the rising Rann-Thanagar tensions.  The nefarious Fadeaway Man sets in motion a vengeful payback scheme against the Hawks.

REVIEW:

Definitely well-played!  Co-writers Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray devise a sophisticated script steeped in current DC events that should entice long-time fans.  Not only is Carter and Kendra’s  chemistry spot-on, the sequence re: best friends Ray & Carter is excellent – Palmiotti & Gray readily grasp why this camaraderie dates back to the Silver Age.

Further enhancing this storyline are the art squad’s high-caliber visuals, which likely exceeds any fan’s expectation.   Suffice to say, as the cool cover image implies, Hawkman # 46 is a compelling read.

ADDITIONAL CONTENT:

An unnamed DC ‘mole’ pens the single-page “DC in Demand” column.  Thumbnail cover reveals are for: Sgt. Rock: The Prophecy # 1; Gotham Central # 37; Infinite Crisis # 2; and Hawkman # 47 (which occurs after Rann/Thanagar War # 6).
