SUMMARY:
Published by DC Comics for January 2009, this penultimate issue is entitled “On the Eve of …..” The interstellar crisis is reaching its critical point, as Adam Strange and his allies (Hawkman; Starfire; Bizarro; Captain Comet; Weird; and Animal Man, among them) make a last ditch effort to save the planet Rann. Starfire & Weird seek help from Lady Styx’s armada, only to be forced to escape from her tyrannical clutches. Adam Strange and Captain Comet discover the chilling power supply behind Synnar’s seemingly omnipotent power.
With his ominous failsafe ‘Plan X’ set into play, Strange says farewell to his beloved Alanna, hoping he has one last miracle save left in him. As Strange’s squad and various other temporary allies start inflicting heavy losses, an infuriated Synnar threatens to unleash a galactic Armageddon.
REVIEW:
Bolstered by this issue’s top-tier visuals (including a spot-on cover image), veteran writer Jim Starlin delivers a solidly entertaining Star Wars-worthy adventure. The Starfire-Weird and Strange-Comet team-ups both prove well-played, as is the possible farewell scene between Strange and his wife.
While a hipper-than-usual Captain Comet is entertaining, Starlin’s faithful rendition of Adam Strange is what really hold this issue together. Considering the level of chaos, Starlin still keeps readers engaged throughout, which is no easy task. Combined with the impressive artwork, Rann-Thanagar Holy War # 7 is a pretty solid read for DC’s deep space fans.
ADDITIONAL CONTENT:
The normal “DC Nation” column is noted as ‘under construction,’ though it is decorated by a split-screen image of Tim Drake’s Red Robin; Batwoman; and Damian Wayne’s Robin. A black-and-white sketch thumbnail cover revealing the next issue’s chaos is accompanied by thumbnail covers re: Batman and the Outsiders # 13; Terra # 2; and JSA Special: Magog.
