SUMMARY:
Entitled “Adjourned,” this October 2011 issue from DC Comics ends the JLA’s last incarnation prior to its New 52 reboot. Aboard the League’s Watchtower satellite, Dick Grayson’s Batman; Jade; an injured Starman; Congorilla; a pregnant Jesse Quick; a burnt-out Donna Troy; and Supergirl each poignantly decide it’s time to depart the League.
Presented as a group retrospective (similar to a TV series finale), their recent adventures over the last five weeks are revealed. Among them, the team faces the DC Universe’s robots; invading Thanagarians; and a journey to Gemworld. As each teammate divulge why he or she is quitting the League, a subdued Batman (Dick Grayson) decides that the League’s future is somebody else’s problem. The Watchtower is evidently abandoned for now.
Note: Though the image isn’t provided with this comic, a variant cover was created by artist David Mack.
REVIEW:
It’s fair to say that DC Comics squanders this issue by ending its last pre-New 52 Justice League with a whimper. For instance, none of its previous all-stars (Superman, Green Lantern, Black Canary, Wonder Woman, Black Lightning, Flash, etc.) even make a cameo. Instead, readers get a downbeat team meeting igniting a domino effect that topples this makeshift League. Revealing each Leaguer at a personal crossroads, the script plausibly settles why they all need some down time.
In that sense, Robinson’s end result is adequate enough. Though Dick & Donna’s last scene is poignant, this issue is still a considerable letdown to finish this high-profile series’ five-year run. At least, the art team’s stellar visuals deliver some JLA magic (as seen in the issue’s spot-on cover). If only to experience this underrated League’s highlight package, then Justice League of America # 60 is worth a read.
