SUMMARY:
Entitled “Secret of Genesis: The Origin of The Red Tornado, Part II,” it was published by DC Comics for August 1981. The issue’s JLA line-up consists of: Wonder Woman; an injured Batman; Firestorm; the Flash; Superman; Green Lantern; Aquaman; and Red Tornado, with a flashback cameo by Adam Strange. Searching for the missing Red Tornado, Aquaman’s spy mission on T.O. Morrow finds him being frozen alive by Morrow’s power sceptre.
While Morrow tries disassembling the Tornado, the League desperately tries to revive Aquaman aboard their orbiting satellite. Locating Morrow in the Rocky Mountains , the JLA faces the awesome ‘Tornado Tyrant.’ With Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, the Flash, and Superman subdued, it’s up to Firestorm to save what’s left of the Tornado.
REVIEW:
Though a rehash of Red Tornado’s convoluted origin is distracting, this issue is still an entertaining read. From the Flash’s scolding of Firestorm to the League’s action against a living tornado, writer Gerry Conway delivers a well-played adventure. As the character’s co-creator, Conway builds up Firestorm by casting him as the team rookie setting up in the face of imminent doom.
Better yet, this comic is supported by excellent visuals — that’s practically a given, considering it’s George Pérez. Accordingly, Justice League of America # 193 is a terrific DC tale that deserves a chance for re-discovery.
ADDITIONAL CONTENT:
There’s a fifteen-page preview of All-Star Squadron # 1. Also, a single-page “JLA Mail Room” letters-and-answers column is included.
