SUMMARY:
Published by Marvel Comics for February 2010, this second issue of a four-part mini-series is titled “Kill Matsu’o, Chapter Two.” In Dubai, Saudi Arabia, an unexpected attack by Matsu’o Tsurayaba’s forces upon Fahd Alireza’s penthouse home has an explosive outcome. Meanwhile, in Tokyo, haunted by her own past connect to Tsurayaba, X-Man Psylocke/Betsy Braddock vengefully kills her way through a mobster-filled nightclub to learn her prey’s hiding place.
In the same city, on a personal mission, Betsy’s teammate, Wolverine, is the last one left being served in a bar piled with dead goons. Well after nightfall, Psylocke makes her stealthy move to breach Tsurayaba’s posh safehouse, only to face mercenary Yukio in vicious one-on-one combat. Worse yet, Betsy must contend with another ruthless predator seeking retribution against their shared enemy.
Notes: Per the cover’s warning, this issue carries a parental advisory label. Also, evidently, a textless variant cover exists.
REVIEW:
Aside from the glamorized mass killings by both Psylocke and Wolverine, this Kill Bill-style action-adventure from writer Chris Yost is well-played. In particular, the dialogue expressed between Yukio and Psylocke during their reluctant fight scene is a highlight. Including a dynamite cover image, the high-caliber visuals make an even better asset. For Psylocke fans and those readers seeking an action-packed Marvel heroine, Psylocke # 2 most certainly delivers the goods.
ADDITIONAL CONTENT:
The first page summarizes Psylocke’s backstory and this mini-series to date. A full-page ad hypes Red She-Hulk’s mysterious true identity for the Fall of the Hulks saga. There’s also a two-page photo spread from MarvelFest NYC 2009.
BRIAN’S ODD MOON RATING: 8 Stars
