SUMMARY:
Published by Marvel Comics for September 2017, this 28-page freebie promo issue provides three-to-four page previews of these Spider-Man graphic novels: Spider-Man – Amazing Origins by Cullen Bunn & Neil Edwards; Amazing Spider-Man – Worldwide, Vol. 1 by Dan Slott & Giuseppe Camuncoli; Spider-Man: Miles Morales Vol. 1 by Brian Michael Bendis & Sara Pichelli; and Spider-Gwen – Most Wanted? By Jason Latour & Robbie Rodriguez. Also included is a first issue sneak peek at a rebooted Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man by Chip Zdarsky, Adam Kubert, & Jordie Bellaire.
The four-page Amazing Origins glimpse depicts a showboating Spider-Man’s initial appearance on national television. Four pages from Worldwide Vol. 1 depict Spider-Man & Mockingbird in a Spider-Mobile hot pursuit chasing after Zodiac henchmen. The Spectacular Spider-Man four-page preview guest-stars Ant-Man. Kicking off his new series with a three-page preview, Miles Morales’ Spider-Man must abruptly leave school to leap into an explosive downtown crisis. In a four-page Most Wanted? cliffhanger, a wisecracking Spider-Gwen tangles with the Vulture.
REVIEW:
Aside from a humorless Mockingbird needing some work on her team-up banter, these glimpses offer an engaging read for Spider-fans and newcomers alike. In particular, the varying visual styles are all terrific — clearly, none of these art teams are taking a lazy approach to Spider-Man. The writing seems above-average, though Spectacular Spider-Man’s re-launch is far more business-as-usual than the other previews. While keeping mind that this glorified catalog isn’t likely a keeper, it makes a tempting case to check upon Spider-Man’s current adventures.
ADDITIONAL CONTENT:
There are even more Spider-ads galore: the Color Your Own Spider-Man trade paperback; six True Believers reprints of Spider-Man issues; a Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man subscription offer; a welcome to author Rainbow Rendell as the creative force behind a re-launched Runaways # 1; an Amazing Spider-Man vs. Vulture greatest hits trade paperback; and a plug for the Marvel Unlimited website.
