GREEN LANTERN (HAL JORDAN) # 36 (2009 DC Comics)

Written by Geoff Johns

Art by Ivan Reis; Oclair Albert; Nel Ruffino; & Rob Leigh

Cover Art by Shane Davis; Sandra Hope; & Nel Ruffino

SUMMARY:

Entitled “Rage of the Red Lanterns, Part Two,” this 36-page comic was published by DC Comics for January 2009.  On planet Ysmault, a crucified Sinestro faces imminent death from Atrocitus and his bloodthirsty Red Lantern Corps.  Hal Jordan, Kilowog, and John Stewart meet Blue Lantern Saint Walker.  Accompanying Saint Walker to the Blue Lantern Corps homeworld of Odym, Hal encounters Ganthet.  Saint Walker tells Hal the power source of the Blue Lantern rings.

Witnessing the galactic handiwork of Blue Lanterns Saint Walker and Warth vs. a supernova, Hal is stunned by Ganthet’s request.  Now recruited into the Star Sapphires, Fatality continues her vendetta against John Stewart.  Atrocitus reveals he knows Sinestro’s seemingly best-kept secret.

REVIEW:

Power-packed by the art team’s stunning visuals (including an awesome cover), writer Geoff Johns unleashes a thrill ride accelerating the Red Lantern Corps as a galactic threat.  However, some of the plot’s intense imagery isn’t kid-friendly, as one panel depicts a Yellow Lantern being brutally murdered.

To Johns’ credit, however, his rotation of multiple sub-plots flows smoothly, though newcomers might be confused by this issue’s complexity.  Including a revelation of the poetic Blue Lantern Corps oath, Green Lantern # 36 is a worthy read for Hal Jordan’s ongoing exploits.

ADDITIONAL CONTENT:

In the DC Nation column, Dan DiDio reveals a brief backstory as to how he helped concoct the returns of Hal Jordan and Barry Allen, each through a Rebirth mini-series.  A thumbnail cover reveal of Green Lantern # 37 is included.
