SUMMARY:
Entitled “Coming Apart at the Seams … (Everything Happens at Once),” Marvel Comics published this issue for May 1999. Black Bolt & Medusa urge the Genetic Council to measure justice by putting an Inhuman’s human slayer on trial before ordering possible execution.
With Attilan (situated on the original above-sea location of Atlantis) besieged by Russian mercenaries, a fugitive Maximus foments the outcast Alphas to support an insurrection. He further launches a pivotal move at usurping his brother’s throne. Upon abducting his mind-controlled sister-in-law, Medusa, as his hostage/pawn, Maximus reveals to Attilan at large his grand extortion scheme.
REVIEW:
In terms of sophisticated storytelling in this genre, writer Paul Jenkins is most impressive. Led by Jae Lee, the art team’s brand of sci-fi/fantasy noir equals Jenkins scene-for-scene, as far as twisting the plot with grotesque realism. For long-time Inhumans fans, this issue continues an intriguing and bleak new direction for the franchise.
As for casual readers, they’re not likely to find Inhumans # 7 entertaining, as neither super-heroics nor any comic relief happen. Still, this issue makes an excellent test case for readers to judge whether or not to obtain this entire storyline.
