SUMMARY:
For its ‘Marvel Knights’ imprint, this 32-page issue entitled “Plan B” was published by Marvel Comics for October 1999. At Black Bolt’s behest, Gorgon and Karnak unleash a cataclysmic earthquake to sink an island-like Attilan (residing upon the original site of Atlantis) into the Atlantic Ocean and thwart Commander Stalyenko’s invasion crew.
Stalyenko’s forces and the world at large believe the earthquake has been caused by heavy artillery fire. Elsewhere on the island, Medusa & Triton learn from Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner a portion of Black Bolt’s ruse. Crystal tries saving what she can of the island. Using Lockjaw’s teleportation powers, Attilan disappears to an unknown sanctuary, as ramifications of Black Bolt’s escape plan are glimpsed.
REVIEW:
Exquisitely written and visualized, Inhumans # 12 is an intriguing step forward for the franchise. It simultaneously offers a temporary end and a new beginning. Not only does writer Paul Jenkins incorporate the most familiar Inhumans into the plot, but readers will see its newest generation as well.
Even if this storyline isn’t slam-bang entertainment, it compensates with intelligent writing, plot twists worthy of Black Bolt’s covert scheming, and beautifully-rendered artwork (including Jae Lee’s terrific cover image) . Though its script won’t necessarily appeal to pre-teens, Inhumans # 12 is a welcome read for long-time Inhumans fans.
ADDITIONAL CONTENT:
In addition to a full-page “Bullpen Bulletins” column, there is a single-page “Lockjawin” letters-and-answers column.
